The Public Health Authority of the Slovak Republic monitors occurrence of toxic cyanobacteria in water reservoirs and recreational water in cooperation with the Regional Public Health Authorities and prepares legislation in this area.
Monitoring and assessment system of the toxic cyanobacteria´s abundance has been established in Slovak national legislation relating to recreational water since 2002. Currently, Public Health Authority of the Slovak Republic observes 35 water resources, about 30% of this amount has problems with abundance of cyanobacteria. Main dominant species are: Microcystis spp., Woronichinia naegeliana, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, Dolichospermum spp. The cyanotoxins - microcystins, cylindrospermopsin (HPLC-DAD) and acute ecotoxicity of water and bloom are monitored in the case of abundance of cyanobacteria.
The concentration of microcystin-LR is monitored in water reservoirs in the case of abundance of cyanobacteria according to national legislation since 2010.
